INDIANAPOLIS – Today, Mayor Joe Hogsett and Indy Parks officially reopened the renovated Krannert Park Family Center. The $10.8 million project is part of Mayor Hogsett’s Circle City Forward Initiative which invested $45 million into major park projects across the city.
“In February of 2021, when the City of Indianapolis debuted Circle City Forward, our goal was to find ways to make projects like today’s possible, without raising taxes or dipping into the annual operating budget,” said Mayor Hogsett. “This $10.8 million investment in Krannert Park delivers everything you would want from a modern, neighborhood park.”
“Investments like Krannert Park Family Center foster social connections, promote health and recreation, and create a vibrant and inclusive space for families to grow together,” said Councilor Jared Evans, Chair of the Parks Committee. “The return of these investments for the west side extends far beyond dollars and cents – they manifest in the richness of community life and the shared memories that will endure for generations.”
The new Krannert Family Center includes a new indoor pool with large garage doors to connect it to a new outdoor splash pad, a new fitness room with a walking track, treadmills and other cardio equipment, weightlifting machines, dumbbells, and free weights. Other improvements include improved and expanded office and meeting space, renovated lockers and restrooms, heating and cooling improvements, and a new enclosed outdoor program and event space. The Family Center hours will be 9am to 8pm on weekdays and 9am to 4pm on Saturdays. The new indoor pool is undergoing final testing and will be available for use in the coming weeks when the testing process is complete.
“Indy Parks is excited to share this great new facility with the west side and the entire city,” said Indy Parks Director Phyllis Boyd. “We’re also excited to share that we’re not done making investments at Krannert Park. I hope that residents will join us this Wednesday evening to learn more about the Lilly Endowment investment that will include a new playground and improvements to the trails and courts.”
Indy Parks will be hosting an Open House on Wednesday, January 24 at 6:30 pm at Krannert Park to provide information and receive public feedback on the $3.7 million Lilly Endowment project planned for Krannert Park. The project will include improvements to the playground, trails, and basketball court.
Ongoing Circle City Forward projects include the new Frederick Douglass Park Family Center scheduled for completion this spring, the Grassy Creek Environmental Education Center scheduled for completion this fall, and the Riverside Adventure Park scheduled for completion at the end of 2024. The Riverside Promenade was completed in October 2023.
